Batman or Sherlock Holmes? Both have been popularized as the World's Greatesst Detective in their eras. Batman seems to have read about Sherlock Holmes and learned his skills and more.

When people think of Batman, they don't always think of the Detective skills, just him beating up the bad guys. But he was skilled at both.

When people think of Sherlock Holmes, they don't always think of his martial arts skills, just him solving crimes and mysteries. But he was skilled at both.

Who would you say was the better Detective? Red Vision brought up this question in a thread and here were my thoughts which I added there:

"I've noticed that Batman, in many ways, is a newer but also highly modified. And Professor Moriarty was even referred to as a supervillain, if I remember correctly. And Watson & Robin, barely much similar, aside from just being sidekicks. But, Irene Adler and Catwoman are VERY similar. Both in their eras have been referred to as the world's greatest detective.

But, I've noticed that a lot of Sherlock Holmes' investigations were easier, compared to how advanced modern technology is, and how Batman has had to keep up with that. He also had the advantage of learning from all of Sherlock Holmes' methods and mistakes.

If Sherlock Holmes were to have one edge on Batman, in the area of intelligence, it's that he was born crazy, very possibly due to a high functioning form of asperger's syndrome, also leading to a higher IQ, in addition to the (now-illegal) drugs he used, to enhance his intelligence. Batman was made crazy by the experiences he had went through, the suffering caused by witnessing his parents being murdered, and then seeing his city flooded with crime. He also has more common sense than Sherlock Holmes, which makes their levels of intelligence debatable, when you then have to question not who is more intelligence but rather in what ways is one more intelligent than the other."

So, with what you know, or even if you want to take your personal bias in to consideration, that's alright too, but be sure to vote and also explain your reasons as well.

I'm voting Batman because he is more recent, and therefore has knowledge of more updated forensic techniques, as well as everything that Sherlock Holmes knew. He also has the Internet to help him out with investigations and so forth. So I'm basically basing my opinion on how recent his knowledge is.

I voted Sherlock Holmes due to the fact that he had alot of he same crimes have today but no where near I not even close to the tech we have today. Also most or the detective we have today are basied off of Holmes

That is an interesting point. Less technology for one to learn about, also meant less technology to help the detective solve the crimes, which also meant using his skills more than technology to solve such things. Batman did have the luxury of plenty of different types of equipment to help him solve things.

A good question here would be, if one were to put Sherlock Holmes in this era, versus Batman in that era, and each were tasked with solving the mysteries and crimes that the other one had to deal with, based on the knowledge that each of them already had, along with the technologies that existed in those eras they had switched to - also meaning that the criminals also had less technology to work with as well. Who would do better there? Or, to get really deep - which ways would they each have an advantage, and what ways would be their disadvantages?

Tothian,
There was a crossover in one of the animated TV shows where Batman went back in time and met Sherlock Holmes and they were working together to stop a murderer. I don't know if Sherlock Holmes has ever gone forward in time to help Batman out.

I had heard about Sherlock Holmes being in Batman's time, and that he had figured out Batman's identity. I wasn't sure whether Sherlock Holmes was just like, really old at the time, and that it was an old Batman comic, or something like that. I'm not sure if I got it confused for what you're talking about, or if this was done different ways at different times.

It was done in different ways at different times. I'm curious about that comic you're referring to now, though.

Well they both live in different eras, and each have different sets of pro's and con's, but Winter Knight what reasons do you decide Sherlock Holmes on this one? (Also I think you forgot to vote in it too)

While I think I did vote Batman in this - in my mind it was a close one though - and either way makes for an interesting discussion.

I voted on Sherlock Holmes. Though Batman is a great hero Sherlock Holmes does not have all the equipment that Batman does therefore Sherlock Holmes has to go more on what he knows.

Mystery Man,

Dark Ghost and I were talking about that yesterday. I forget if you were there for that part of the conversation and/or if we talked about it before you were on the phone and also after you were on the phone too?

The question I remembered that Dark Ghost and I were asking is whether if Sherlock Holmes would be able to know how to use electronics like Batman was able to study for years. Then we were asking how Sherlock Holmes would do against Batman both with & without the cocaine which supposedly enhanced his abilities.

Another question I didn't think of was how Batman would do - either better OR worse - with cocaine also? (Batman wouldn't take it willingly but in another hypothetical example where he was drugged like in Batman Begins OR if he was in Sherlock Holmes era and it was legal... nah I'd say the former is more likely if anything)

(Not promoting cocaine by the way - just using it as an example because of the reference to it when Sherlock Holmes)

Well a lot of the argument surrounding the characters depends on how intellegent the writers of the characters are. I like Batman better though.
