What Operating System do you use?

Which one do you use the most and why? Is it because it came with your device, or did you install it yourself? And what advantages and disadvantages does it have to you or that you've found so far?

I use a variant of Linux the most. I usually use it on a LiveCD or flash drive. The advantages I've found it it's customizable entirely, and also nearly impossible to get any malware, fast, and I can also use it without touching the HD or even needing one. I also like how most of the time, all I need to do to install something is either a line or two in the terminal, or by using a package manager. A few disadvantages that I've found is that once in awhile a program I want to use won't run or install (at least without some work), and sometimes certain hardware isn't supported by a program or the base of the system.

Been using Linux for years. Never ever liked Windows for many reasons.

Which distributions do you like the most? I like Puppy, Knoppix, Ophcrack, Ubuntu (until it got too slow anyways), Partition Magic, Zorin OS, PCLinuxOS, and OpenSuse. My top favorites from those are Puppy, Knoppix, and Zorin OS.

I prefer Ubuntu at the moment.

Which version? I've tried 12.10, but it was being painfully slow at things like using the Internet, and especially using their built-in Package Manager. I've used that same package manager (can't recall the name of it at the moment) in another distro and it was a lot faster than in Ubuntu.

I'm using 12.10 at work. Doesn't seem slower than 10.04 which I'm using at home.

But Ubuntu isn't the fastest distro. There are many geeky light-weight distros, such as Arch Linux. But after running Arch Linux for a while I gave it up. It was too geeky for me. Each update caused new problems that required you to know a lot more about Linux than I did at the time.

I don't need the fastest distro though. Any Linux distro will always be faster than Windows. I just need the distro that let's me not spend time fixing things after updates, and Ubuntu has been very great there.

Do you use the built-in Unity, or another desktop? I found Unity harder to use, so I replaced it with gnome-panel.

I don't like Unity. Removed it and use gnome panel too.

I'm not sure. I'd have to ask you. Windows is what I think I had before. Although temporarily using something called peppermint but not sure if that's part of Linux or what it is. But you'd know more about what I'm using than I would.

Actually I had no idea what Peppermint was, but a quick google search revealed that it's a Linux distro.

You were using Windows Vista before. As for Peppermint, it is a Linux distro. I think it has a few bugs though, like the mic issue and it not throwing any errors in the package manager when I'm trying to install something and it won't install.
