Batman and Philosophy: The Dark Knight of the Soul Empty
PostSubject: Batman and Philosophy: The Dark Knight of the Soul   Batman and Philosophy: The Dark Knight of the Soul I_icon_minitimeMon Jan 30, 2012 3:16 am

I haven't read it in a few years, but here's a Philosophy Book that I highly suggest to any and every Crimefighter out there. It opened up my mind in countless ways, it did make reference to a lot of the comic books, and the ethics of the actions and insanity, and whether Batman was helping Gotham the best way it could be helped, or if there were better ways to do that. It doesn't just tell you what to think, but it teaches you how to think, by weighing the pro's and con's of each thought, idea, action, so that you could form your own opinions, but once you do, you'll at least know why you feel a certain way about certain things, in specific detail.

It even discussed worst case scenarios, and why Batman would do this instead of do that, and even though this would happen, this was the way he thought and this was his motivation, and why. You begin to not just see the morally grey areas, but you begin to understand them. You'll no longer look at a forest just as a forest, but you'll see it for each tree - if that makes sense. It doesn't just talk about Batman, but also Robin, and whether it was right for Batman to take on a Sidekick or not, it discusses The Joker and whether he could really be held morally responsible for his actions because of his insanity, and gave examples of his insanity.

One of the most interesting things it talked about was whether the actions of Batman could be judged as worthy of merit or demerit, or if the results of his actions were more important - and they gave so many specific examples, and depending on the way the story is told, or what part has a stronger emphasis put on it, would make most readers lean toward a certain way of thinking, but really just a same story told either by someone else or told differently. However, if you know your self and which way you think, then you can't be manipulated in to thinking a different way. Or, is that fair to not listen to when someone has a good point? These are the kinds of ideas of ways I learned to think, just from reading this book.

I read it a while back, it was very interesting, it also talked about why if Batman and Superman ever had to fight, why Superman would lose, in a way that made perfect sense.

I highly recommend it to anyone that's interested in the ethics of being a SuperHero.

ShowStopper,

I think I remember that part, too. It spoke of how Superman trusted Batman so much, that he gave him some kryptonite, in case Superman ever went bad, or anything like that.

And I agree. While there are some of these kinds of books for other things like this, such as The Watchmen, Iron Man, and Heroes TV Series - all of which I've either read parts of or the whole thing, the Batman one was the first one I've read and my favorite one, the one I felt that I could relate to the most, understood, and found it relevant.

Tothian, do you own a copy of this? Is this a mainstream book?

Wall Creeper,

Yes I own a copy of it and I think it's a mainstream book. You should be able to find it at a bookstore near you, if not they could always order it. I don't think it's too old, I read it about 3 years ago.

Funny you should reply to this, I had just referenced this book to you in another thread.

Haha! I have this one too!; I was thinking about including it in my training library, but decided that I primarily read it just for fun, and I wanted to try and stick with books that are mor elike training manuals. But yes, this is a good one too; it sort of reminds me of...me, lol. I sort of think Batman and a very similar type of crazy. Funny we both came from pain and tragedy and we both trained rediculously; only I didn't originally train with going after bad guys in mind, I just trained because I was a scared little boy who never wanted to be a victim again.

It was a fun read, and also the ethics in it I noticed applied to people like us in reference to what we all do. Like with some of the worst case scenarios and decision making process. And also some of the psychological factors, as well as portraying both sides of different views about him, listing the pro's and con's for each view.

It also talked about people close to Batman like Robin, Alfred, Superman, and even some of his arch nemeses too.

I remember a section in it was saying how in a way Batman is better than Superman because Batman "Has to be brave" and has to have legit skills, whereas superman can just sneeze someone into low orbit or something haha XD

Yep. That would make sense. As for it being in there, I don't remember exactly if it was or not, although it sounds like the kind of stuff that I do remember from the book. I read it around mid 2009.

I would consider it the kind of book that I could read again, both because it's an enjoyable topic, as well as how much it really opens your mind to various relevant stuff that we likely have not thought about before.

There's also some other books from the same series, some of which I've read, and some of which I would like to read eventually.
