This one mainly takes place in an alternate 1985, while showing some history from like the Vietnam era, the 1960's, and decades earlier than that, like the 1940's. In this, Richard Nixon is still President in his 5th term in 1985. Superheroes were outlawed in the late 70's in the Keene Act.

The main part of the story shows the 2nd generation of superheroes, where Rorschach is investigating the murder of the Comedian, and then starts contacting the other retired superheroes, but everyone seems different then, either not as friendly with him, or just not really in to the superhero thing anymore.

The world is on the brink of World War Three. Things get crazy, the story is a little different from the movie because the story leaves room for your own interpretation of things in ways the movie can't. They're mostly just regular people who create these superhero identities, except for one guy, Dr. Manhattan, who has the superpowers to do just about anything.

The main bad guy of this film I personally consider to be one of the most evil villains in just about any comic book, because he had tried convincing the other heroes why it was okay to do something villainous, justifying a villainous act for a heroic result of saving the world from nuclear destruction.

There is a lot of symbolism and philosophy in this book. In the earlier days of this community, some of the RLSH's have considered Alan Moore, the writer of this comic book, a prophet.

The weird thing about this book, is that Alan Moore specifically wrote it so that it could never be made into a movie. And sure enough, it was made in to a movie.

lol!

It does get in to stuff like that, although not a lot of it spot-on accurate, it does give a general idea, as well as providing us with a very interesting story.

In the book "Watchmen & Philosophy: A Rorschach Test", it did talk about the ethics behind the actions of Rorschach & Ozymandias. It outlines the pro's and con's of each of their actions, and defining each of their systems of ethics, as well as getting in to deep thought about each of the characters in the story.

I must be honest, Even though many people died...What Ozy did, was to make the world a better place, yes?

No, I am not saying I'd do that, but I understand why Ozy did what he did.

Wouldn't there be another way to get the same effect without the death? Did he really need to kill all those people just so the world would think that aliens were attacking?

Well they made it known why he did it. I just don't agree with what he did. I actually spoke about that in the Watchmen Special Features which is on the BluRay Disc, titled "Real superheroes, real vigilantes".

I wouldn't have done that. I don't believe that it would've actually led to global destruction had he not done that. And I don't believe that in a real life situation, that it would've created peace amongst the enemies. I believe that the enemies would've laughed at them. From a strategic perspective, Ozymandias would've needed to set up something against both of them, so that they both would've had common enemies to unite against. But it wasn't like that. And even if something like that had happened, which obviously we'd hope wouldn't happen, the murders wouldn't have been on his hands. He was called the smartest man in the world, but couldn't even find a peaceful solution to world peace. Something good (the peace that was formed from it) formed from something bad (innocent people dying because of it).

There was also some hypocricy from Rorschach's part. He spoke highly of President Harry Truman who did that to Japan at the end of WW2, and said how even though lots of innocent people died, it stopped more people from dying. But then went against Ozymandias for doing the same thing. I don't think it was a mistake on the writer's part. I think he added the hypocricy for a good reason, to make the story more real. Since nobody is perfect and it's not easy to always follow our ideals 100% of the time, but it doesn't mean we don't have those ideals and it doesn't mean we don't try.

I favor the actions over the consequence. We can control our actions, but we can't always control the consequences.
